Wayne County Jail:

In 1973, MLS filed a lawsuit on behalf of inmates at the Wayne County Jail suing to improve conditions at the jail. There was protracted litigation that was appealed to the Michigan Supreme Court that resulted in the court ordering many improvements at the jail. The case continued at the trial court level. In the 1980's and 1990's, the Wayne County Circuit Court appointed an independent monitor who negotiated many chnages that were incorporated into standing orders at the jail. In 2005, the parties negotiated a final court order that closed the case except that the court retained jurisdiction to enforce the order. Currently, the consent orders in the case are still used at the jail and MLS continues to represent the inmates interest.
